This map identifies ten key sources of oil in the United States from the discovery of the Drake Well in 1859 to the present. Although American prospectors discovered other oilfields during this period, those noted here not only produced an enormous volume of oil in the United States but also signaled important technological junctures and/or represented historic oil booms.
