An epistle to Rowena, written at Deer-
field July 7, 1769
Madam,
If my paper this afternoon must
give you a description of my feeling, the
picture will be [?] & gloomy. But as
Gloom & Sorrow which now & then come
come upon us seem to set off our lives
as Shades adorn a well made Picture
you will possibly therefore excuse me
while I am repeating over my
Thoughts & perhaps Sympathize with
me as with a Freind.—
The Changes in Nature & the Devast-
-ations of Time are the Subject of my
Thoughts, & my own Interest in the

Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, Princeton University Library.
